Practice Portrait

Park Health Centre is a busy, forward thinking, inner City General Practice, which has occupied the present site since the 1970’s.

The 6 January 1996 was a significant date for the Practice, for on this day, the Practice moved from portacabins, into the newly refurbished present building.

The Practice population is mainly centred on four areas of Sheffield, Park Hill, Hyde Park, Manor and Darnall, with a significant Patient population drawn from the Wybourn, Intake and Stradbroke estates.

Park Hill

One of the main Practice areas, Park Hill, is now a listed building site, as Park Hill was one of the first estates to be built with the ‘streets in the sky’, incorporated into the design of the estate. It is a very compact area enjoying between 2 and 5 street levels

Integral to the Park Hill estate, is a small community of shops, a Primary School and designated play areas for the children.

Hyde Park

The Hyde Park estate is situated next to Park Hill and along with the Park Hill flats, has enjoyed extensive refurbishment of the properties and surrounding area.

Manor Estate

The Manor estate was developed during the 1920’s as a result of a major slum clearance programme in the Attercliffe area of Sheffield. During the 1980’s, an extensive refurbishment was implemented, which resulted in a significant number of the properties being demolished. More recently, notably on the lower Manor, this area has been redeveloped, resulting in a number of well cared for, pleasant neighbourhoods, which, in turn, has also resulted in the creation of other ghetto areas, prone to vandalism and decay.

Darnall

The Patients in the Darnall area of Sheffield, although a little way from the Surgery, have historically followed the Practice to its’ present site on Duke Street. (The Practice was originally sited in Attercliffe.)

Darnall Patients are drawn mainly from the Asian population of Sheffield. The Patients are happy to travel to Park Health Centre, even though there are GP’s and Health Centres within their own area.
